Prices of pendrives way down!

Wow. Traffic in KL's absolutely gorgeous today. It's Federal Territory Day, so I half-expected it to be chock-a-block with people shopping and whatnot, but no. Low Yat's parking was full, but there weren't too many cars on the road nor too many people in the mall. Weirdness.

To cut a long story short, I got to the 2nd floor (which is 3 levels up from Ground - who plans this shit?!?) which is the PC stuff floor and I see these particular signs plastered all over. Mainly about pendrives. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was along the lines of:
  • 1 GB = RM30
  • 2 GB = RM40
  • 4 GB = RM50
You can check it out at Low Yat's page - pricelists are along the left bar.

Yerks. That's mental. Coming from the generation where floppy disks were the norm, and their 512kb was enough. And they were 5 1/2 inches and floppy. At that time, a technological breakthrough was DOUBLING that space, into a whopping 1.2MB!

Then came the beautiful Hard Disk. In a mind-boggling 20MB. Holy crap what are we gonna do with 20 megabytes?!? What, we don't need floppy disks anymore?!?

That was just 20 years ago. Now, we have 1 TB Hard Disks. That's 1,000 GB (I can't remember if it's 1,000 or 1,024 - I know someone in the industry cheats but I forget who), which is 1,000,000 MB. Which is 50,000 of those old-school museum-mari Hard Disks, in one. Crikey. And not forgetting the subject of this post, we have 4 GB pendrives now for about RM50 (that's 200 of those hard disks in one little USB-port device).

Of course, RM50 for 4GB sounded too good to resist, and man was it hard resisting. I almost wanted to buy it for the sheer bargain it seemed to be. But then I already have a 256MB (no, it's not funny) pendrive that I don't even fill up, so what would I do with 4GB?

What a consumption-oriented world we live in.

PS: On another note, here are some links to photos taken of what The Oral Stage did at KLPac for the Open Day:

man, i thought i was the only one! i hate consumerism only because i know how much i fall for it.

and as for that east-vs-west thing... with some exceptions here and there, it could have easily been re-labelled as 'a visual guide to davina's relationship problems'. fun post :P
